چکیده

Strong, anisotropic turbulence reflecting magnetized filaments is considered, to model the diffusive acceleration of particles by shock waves in active galactic nucleus jets. We address that at knot A of the nearby M87 jet, the shock involving the filamentary turbulence can accelerate an iron nucleus to zetta-eV (ZeV; 10 eV) ranges. A smaller value of the particle diffusion coefficient is found to be essential to achieve a ZeV cosmic-ray accelerator, a “Zevatron.” Subject headings: acceleration of particles — galaxies: individual (M87) — galaxies: jets — magnetic fields — methods: analytical — shock waves

Energisation of interstellar media and cosmic ray production by jets from X-ray binaries

Drawing on recent estimates of the power of jets from X-ray binary systems as a function of X-ray luminosity, combined with improved estimates of the relevant Log(N)Log(LX) luminosity functions, we calculate the total energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM) from these objects. The input of kinetic energy to the ISM via jets is dominated by those of the black hole systems, in contrast to t...

A Chandra Survey of Quasar Jets: First Results

We present results from Chandra X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of a flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like extended structure. Twelve of twenty quasar jets are detected in 5 ks ACIS-S exposures. The quasars without X-ray jets are not significantly different from those in the sample with detected jets except that the extended radio emission is generally fainter...

Molecular tracers of filamentary CO emission regions surrounding the central galaxies of clusters

Context. Optical emission is detected from filaments around the central galaxies of clusters of galaxies. These filaments have lengths of tens of kiloparsecs. The emission is possibly due to heating caused by the dissipation of mechanical energy and by cosmic ray induced ionisation. CO millimeter and submillimeter line emissions as well as H2 infrared emission originating in such filaments surr...

Particle Diffusion and Acceleration by Shock Wave in Magnetized Filamentary Turbulence

We expand the off-resonant scattering theory for particle diffusion in magnetized current filaments that can be typically compared to astrophysical jets, including active galactic nucleus jets. In a high plasma β region where the directional bulk flow is a free-energy source for establishing turbulent magnetic fields via current filamentation instabilities, a novel version of quasi-linear theor...

Can X-Ray Jets Be Cosmic Beacons?

If X-rays observed from any extragalactic radio jets are due to inverse Compton scattering on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, then such a source will be detectable with the same surface brightness anywhere in the more distant universe. Chandra observations imply that such systems do exist, and will therefore serve as Cosmic Beacons out to the redshift at which they form.
